“We are in a race against time to save our oceans”
After his Ross Sea swim in 2015, which helped secure the largest protected area in the world, Lewis established the Lewis Pugh Foundation to campaign for Marine Protected Areas in all of our oceans. MPAs are akin to National Parks on land. And they are one of the best means we have to protect our oceans.

Lewis’s gift for storytelling puts the plight of the oceans, including the biodiversity crisis, the climate crisis and pollution on the agendas of governments and concerned citizens around the world.
To date, the Foundation has been instrumental in securing full protection for over 2 million km2 of the most biodiverse and vulnerable parts of the ocean, an area the size of Western Europe.
This journey is only just beginning. The Foundation’s goal is to ensure that at least 30% of our oceans are properly protected by 2030.
